Learn to paint a beautiful foxglove in watercolour. - This is a digital product, no physical item will be sent.
Part of my Folklore of Flowers – Botanical Painting Studies, a collection of gentle, informative painting tutorials inspired by the flowers around us and the stories, symbolism and folklore that surround them.
Foxglove is a particularly fascinating flower to begin with. Beautiful and delicate, but also poisonous, it has a long history of associations with fairies, magic, healing and darker folklore.
In this tutorial, I'll take you through my process of creating a simple foxglove botanical study, from understanding the individual shapes of the flowers and leaves through to creating your finished composition.
Inside the tutorial
A little folklore and history of the foxglove
Reference images to help you study the flower
A practice sheet for drawing and painting individual flowers and leaves
My approach to breaking botanical subjects down into simple shapes
A video demonstration of the practice elements
Guidance on creating your composition
A printable traceable composition if you'd rather concentrate on the painting
A full watercolour painting demonstration
Guidance on progressing your composition and creating your own version
The tutorial is deliberately simple and approachable. You don't need to create a highly detailed or photorealistic botanical painting. Instead, I'll show you how to look at the flower, simplify what you see and capture its character with watercolour.
You can follow my composition, trace the provided drawing, or use what you've learnt to create something completely your own.
What you'll need
Watercolour paper, watercolours, a couple of small round brushes, a waterproof fine liner, pencil and a few basic painting supplies.
You don't need to use exactly the same paints as me — my colour guide is included to give you a starting point.
A little more than a painting tutorial
Folklore of Flowers is about taking the time to really look at the plants around us.
Each study combines botanical painting with the stories, symbolism and folklore associated with the flower, creating a little more context and curiosity around the subject you're painting.
I hope these studies encourage you to slow down, look closely and perhaps see familiar flowers a little differently.
